Film From the Beginning

I have never been someone who was interested in older films. The lack of technology and color never interested me. This was something I struggled with while watching Dr. Caligari. I wasn't very intrigued in the film itself, but then I began comparing it to newer, more modern films. Then, I became more intrigued because I started thinking about what this film would look like if it was recreated in today's time.

I am very interested in the development of films and seeing older films compared to remakes. The increase in technology we have available to us today doesn't even compare to the amount in the past. Seeing who invented certain things and how far they have developed is very interesting. Certain technologies were created for a purpose, but today we have developed technologies to serve so many purposes. For example, the iPhone. We can even make films on our cellphones now! In the past, the telephone was only used to make calls. However, the cellphone has so many different purposes now.

In this class, I am also excited to learn about movie genres and how they came to be. In our first reading, we read about certain film industries taking over specific genres. However, we now know that did not work and the movies all seemed to be the same.

Dr. Caligari is a perfect first film to watch in this class because it shows how movies were so long ago and how far they've come! We have succeeded so much with technology since this movie was created and we still have so much potential for the future!

  1. When I was watching Dr. Caligari I was also thinking about how it would look like if it was recreated now. I believe the movie effects we have now would add on to the overall plot of the movie. Additionally, sound in the movie would be exceptional. I also was never really interested in old movies just because I couldn't stay focused on it due to there being no sound or color.

  2. I agree, I had a hard time staying focused. I am so used to the movies we have nowadays which contain insane CGI and soundtracks, etc. They are so advanced nowadays that going back to watching Dr. Caligari was rough. However, when I consider the history and how it played the foundation for many future movies, I can appreciate it that way.

  3. Sooooo ... you're interested to see how Caligari might look in modern times. Consider: Beeteljuice, The Wizard of Oz ...

    Can you think of others?

I'm so glad you see the value of Dr. C!

  4. Oh .. Edward Scissorhands (if only for the look and costuming when compared to Cesare)
